Pregnancy & Chiropractic

Chiropractic care can be instrumental before, during, and after pregnancy to maintain a well functioning nervous system for the mother and the baby to prepare for a successful pregnancy. Many times pregnancy discomforts are assumed to be a part of the process, but there is no need to suffer. Chiropractic offers a safe, gentle, hands-on approach to combat pregnancy difficulties, such as nausea, heartburn, constipation, back pain, pubic pain, and others. Being under regular chiropractic care will allow for a subluxation-free pregnancy without joint and nerve dysfunction, allowing the body to transition through the stages of pregnancy and prepare for a successful birth experience with a properly aligned spine.

Here are some tips on keeping the spine in a good and healthy shape with a lower risk of injury to abdominal and pelvic musculature as well as the spine and pelvis:

When sitting up from a lying position: Bend the knees, roll over to one side, and push up with the arms, instead of using, and possibly straining abdominal muscles.

When standing: Keep the knees unlocked. Do not push the tummy forward with the hands on the hips. Wear comfortable, supportive shoes and refrain from wearing high heels. Before standing up, make sure to maintain full contact with the ground by placing your feet firmly first. If twisting the body, move the whole body starting with the feet. Avoid carrying other young children whenever possible to decrease the risk of abdominal injury. If standing for extended time period, place one foot on a small box or something similar to reduce the pressure, and possible pain, on the low back; and switch legs often.

Maintaining a healthy spine during the pregnancy is extremely important.

Exercise: Perform regular moderate cardio- and strength-training routine. Keep the pelvic floor muscles strong. Stretch gently every day. Develop a breathing routine, especially concentrating on the lower abdomen and if stressed. Do prenatal yoga to strengthen your muscles, practice breathing, and cultivate a sense of calm. Swim for non-weight-bearing exercise to make it easier on the joints.

Sleep: Place a pillow between the knees and another at the breast level to support the upper body without introducing rotation in the upper portion of the spine.

Allow proper rest and relaxation: Schedule a prenatal massage as often as possible. Avoid lifting heavy objects by asking for help. Do more yoga. Meditate.

Maintain a regular spinal check-up schedule with your local chiropractor for some remarkable benefits:

  • Less back pain
  • Less discomfort in carrying the baby in the third trimester and during the delivery
  • Significantly reduced labor times
  • Decreased need for painkillers
Chiropractic aids in correcting body’s imbalances, evident in misalignments and overcompensations in posture. The presence of these misalignments,  vertebral subluxation, will interfere with the nervous system’s ability to communicate with the body through distorted brain messages. Allowing the nervous system to meet its challenges with less overall stress will be able to improve the chances of healthier pregnancy naturally. Improving health and well-being from inside out through chiropractic as well as proper nutrition and movement, will help you make significant strides to prepare the body for the New Life.

Healthy Skin Tips for Every Day

Beautiful skin start internally by keeping the body healthy and strong from inside out. Our bodies can be taxed by poor eating and lifestyle habits, and environmental pollutants. If the body is well nourished with all of the appropriate nutrients, the skin will be radiant and healthy. However, if the body lacks these vital nutrients, the skin will reflect that with signs of stress and aging. In addition, some of the beauty products may contain harmful chemicals and threaten long-term health and beauty.

Here are some suggestions for remedies on how to accomplish beautiful, healthy, and balanced skin from inside out:
Nutrition: Eating a diet rich in fatty acids, minerals, and green leafy vegetables is important to maintain the right balance of nutrients with plentiful fiber and water. Eliminating sugar, gluten, dairy, and processed food products help decrease inflammation and acidity in the body. This combination of dietary choices helps maintain a healthy digestive system and support proper elimination, which allows for an active metabolism, increased energy levels, and beautiful skin. Consider green juices that purify kidneys, clean the blood, increase the alkalinity in the body, get rid of acidic waste, and hydrate the body on a cellular level, which all lead to radiant skin and health. Limit caffeine and alcohol consumption as they significantly dehydrate the body.
Hydration: Keeping the body well hydrated inside and out is important to keep the cells moisturized. Drinking enough water is essential. In addition, keeping the living environment humidified decreases the tendency for dry skin and scalp, even nasal passages.
Skincare products: Choose products that do not contain chemical preservatives, synthetic fragrances, and harsh abrasives. Maintaining a delicate moisture balance is important not to dehydrate skin’s barriers, so avoid any product that contains alcohol, glycerin, benzoyl peroxide, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), and BPA. Consider using products that contain naturally-occurring fruit acids or enzyme, which allow for a better absorption of topical antioxidants and humectants.
Exercise: Moderate physical exercise each day increases blood flow to the skin, the brain, and the organs of the body, which results in a beautiful flushed complexion and glow, as sweating eliminates toxins. It also helps improve sleep, which encourages regeneration of body’s tissues.

Shower routine: Before bath time, consider dry brushing to remove dead skin cells and increase circulation and stimulate the removal of toxic through the lymphatic system. Also, use lukewarm water and not spending prolonged time in the shower or bath. Alkalizing water filters for the whole house, especially for the shower, are a great way to change the skin’s pH and decreasing dryness.
Mediation: Creating a daily practice to decrease stress in your life is a great way to rejuvenate the mind and body. Meditation, breathing exercise, and yoga all promote diaphragmatic breathing, increased blood flow, and mental and physical rejuvenation to the whole body system.
So before using a new skincare product, consider nourishing your body from inside out in order to allow you body and spirit to shine through without the additional layers. Spend some time on yourself by feeding your body, mind, and spirit each day, and your skin and body will reflect the self-care you offer to yourself.

Hazards of High Heels

High heels have been a fashion trend for quite some time now, which sometimes resembles acrobatics for many women. Even though, the shoes can be works of art, they also can be associated with certain health risks, which vary from altered biomechanics and gait, stability, loss of proprioception, decreased foot strength, and overall discomfort. So here area few things to consider before slipping into the next pair of gravity-defying shoes.

Posture

High heels contour the spine into a S-curve, which allows women to accentuate certain parts of their body:

  • Center of gravity is pushed forward
  • Chest positioned forward
  • Lower back positioned forward
  • Hips positioned backward
  • Pressure at the knees
  • Downward force and pressure through the balls of the feet, which depends on the height of the heel
    • higher heel = more pressure
    • Example: 3 inch heel = 76% of pressure on forefoot

In comparison, flat shoes allow the spine to maintain neutrality and equal distribution of body weight throughout the entire foot.

Physiological changes in muscles & tendons

Calf muscles

  • May shorten and tighten over time
  • Collapsing of the arches
  • Difficulty of relaxing the foot completely

Achilles tendon

  • May shorten and tighten over time
  • Inability for the foot to rest at a 90-degree angle
  • Limited foot mobility

Knee joint

  • Extra strain on the knee complex tendons
  • Balancing on a high heel increases the pressure on the inside of the knee
  • Quads work harder and increase pressure on the kneecap
  • Possibility of osteoarthritis over time

Ankle

  • Sprain may result from twisting of the ligaments in the ankle between the foot and the lower leg
  • Balancing on the heel creates instability
  • Increased chance of falling, especially if older or obese
  • Sudden shift in balance can twist the ankle and sprain ligaments
  • Haglund’s deformity (“pump bump”) – a bony enlargement from irritation to the heel from rigid backs or straps of heels

Toes

  • Pressure pushes down and forward on the ball of the foot
  • High heels have narrow and tight toe boxes, which force toes to conform to the shape of the shoe without enough room to relax
  • Loss of strength in intrinsic muscles of the foot
  • Create minor conditions, such as bunions, corns, and hammertoes
    • Bunions: a large bony bump at the base of the big tow, which resulted in the joint being forced to permanently misalign and rub against the shoe
    • Corns: hard calluses that form on the top of the toes or on the side of the small toe
    • Hammertoes: a permanent curl at the middle joint of the middle toes that resulted from shortened and tightened ligaments and tendons; pressure on the ball of the foot will cause pain

We all recall the story of Cindarella and the anecdote about what women were willing to do to fit into the glass slipper. We’ve come a long way in terms of fashionable yet comfortable shoes that do not require risking our spinal health, myself included.

Chiropractic can be instrumental in regaining your postural alignment and in preventing further advancement of bony abnormalities in the kinetic chain from hips, knees, ankles, to the toes.

Soy: Good or Bad?!

Soy has been a hot discussion topic as there is conflicting information about soy and whether or not it is good to consume. The questions have been raised about the health and safety of what-was-considered a healthy food. To help clear up some confusion, here are a few things to bring to attention:

Background: Soybeans are legumes native to East Asia. Initially it was considered unfit for human consumption, but it was used for crop rotation as a method of fixing nitrogen to regenerate the soil. In the East Asian cuisines, the soybeans are fermented prior to moderate consumption into products, such as tempeh, miso, natto, and soy sauce. The reason for fermentation is that the process removes the toxins present in the plant and makes the nutrients in the beans available to the body. To simplify the process of preparation for soy consumption, after lengthy soaking and cooking, the beans were treated with nigari, a substance found in seawater, which resulted in tofu. When fermented soy foods are used in small amounts they help build the inner ecosystem, providing a wealth of friendly microflora to the intestinal tract that can help with digestion and assimilation of nutrients, and boost immunity.

With the industrialized processing, the food manufacturers were left with a lot of soy protein that they started adding to processed foods after they split the beans into two different food products:  soybean oil and soy protein (i.e. soy protein isolate, soy protein concentrate, textured vegetable protein or hydrolyzed vegetable protein). These substances are included in majority of processed and fast foods (read the labels!).

Anti-Nutrients: Soy contains phytochemicals (phytates, enzyme inhibitors and goitrogens) that are toxic to the human body. They function as the immune system of the plant, offering protection from the radiation of the sun, and from invasion by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or foragers. All plants have some anti-nutrient properties, but the soybean plant is especially rich in these chemicals. That is why extensive preparation prior to consumption is essential.

Unfermented soy (whole soybeans, soy milk, soy chips, soy protein isolates, soy flour and other industrially processed products) has been linked to digestive distress, immune system breakdown, PMS, endometriosis, reproductive problems for men and women, allergies, ADD and ADHD, higher risk of heart disease and cancer, malnutrition, and loss of libido. Populations most at risk of experiencing the negative effects of unfermented soy are infants through soy baby formula, vegetarians with high soy protein intake, and pre- and menopausal women in search of symptom relief.

Phytates: Bind tightly to minerals in our digestive tract and can block absorption of zinc, copper, iron, magnesium and calcium. It has a particularly strong affinity for zinc, a mineral that supports wound healing, protein synthesis, reproductive health, nerve function, and brain development. Miso and tempeh have the lowest levels of phytates.

The enzyme inhibitors: Interfere with the process of digestive enzymes (amylase, lipase, and protease) and make the carbohydrates and proteins near impossible to digest completely. Incomplete digestion moves into the large intestine, causing discomfort and bloating, and can be even more difficult for people who have naturally low levels of digestive enzymes such as infants and elderly.

Goitorgens: Block the production of thyroid hormone and cause goiter formation. These are compounds known to make it more difficult for the thyroid gland to create its hormones. Low thyroid hormone levels will cause a reduced thyroid function with slow metabolism, low energy level, reduced heart rate, lack of oxygen in cells.

Also blocking thyroid production is genistein, an isoflavone found in soybeans. However, genistein also inhibits tyrosine kinases that is involved in the transfer of energy from one molecule to another, driving cell division, memory consolidation, tissue repair, and blood vessel maintenance and regeneration.

Aluminum: The highly industrialized processing of soy requires acid washing in aluminum tanks. The aluminum leaches into the final soy products that are sold for human consumption. Aluminum is toxic to our nervous system and kidneys, so avoiding all processed soy products is a good rule to follow.

Environmental Impact: The industrialization of soy production has led to genetic modification of the crops, which is unhealthy for human, animals, or the environment,  deforestation and a need for large amounts of pesticides. GM-produced soy also increases the risk of soy allergies and intolerance. Large amounts of it have also been used as animal feed, increasing the need for antibiotics.

Remember: Reading the labels if buying packaged or processed foods is VITAL! Committing to prepare food at home in order to control the quality of the ingredients can be very helpful. If using soy, choosing organic, fermented soy products, such as miso, tempeh, and natto are the wisest options. Make sure when using these products to combine them with other whole foods!

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic = “chiropraktikos” from Greek “chiro” = “hand” + “praktikos” = “concerned with action/practice”

Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts that is based upon the understanding that good health depends, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system (especially the spine, and the nerves extending from the spine to all parts of the body). Chiropractic focuses on disorders of the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on general health.  Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.

Doctors of Chiropractic, or chiropractors, practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle modifications, in order to address the physical, chemical, and emotional stressors.

The nervous system controls every organ in the body

The examination of the spine to evaluate structure and function is what makes chiropractic different from other health care procedures. The spinal column is a series of movable bones that begin at the base of the skull and end in the center between the hip bones at the pelvic bowl. Thirty-one pairs of spinal nerves extend down the spine from the brain and exit through a series of openings. The nerves leave the spine and form a complicated network that influences every living tissue in the body.

The most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as “spinal manipulation,” also called “chiropractic adjustment,” to correct spinal misalignments in the spine called “subluxations.”  The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile – or restricted in their movement – as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.

Manual spinal adjustment

Chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort. However, patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following treatment (as with some forms of exercise) that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours.

In many cases, such as lower back pain, chiropractic care may be the primary method of treatment. When other medical conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition.

Doctors of chiropractic may assess patients through integrative clinical examination, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging and other diagnostic interventions to determine when chiropractic treatment is appropriate or when it is not appropriate.  Chiropractors will readily refer patients to the appropriate health care provider when chiropractic care is not suitable for the patient’s condition, or the condition warrants co-management in conjunction with other members of the health care team.

The Importance of Drinking Water

The human body is anywhere from 55% to 78% water depending on body size. A rule of thumb, 2/3 of body is consists of water, and it is the main component of human body. Most of the body’s tissues and organs are mainly made up of water.

Pinned Image

  • Muscle consists of 75% water
  • Brain consists of 90% of water
  • Bone consists of 22% of water
  • Blood consists of 83% water

The functions of water in human body are vital:

  • Transports nutrients and oxygen into cells
  • Moisturizes the air in lungs
  • Helps with metabolism
  • Protects our vital organ
  • Helps our organs to absorb nutrients better
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Detoxifies
  • Protects and moisturizes our joints

The Harmful Effects Result from Dehydration:

  • Tiredness
  • Migraine
  • Constipation
  • Muscle cramps
  • Irregular blood pressure
  • Kidney problems
  • Dry skin
  • 20% dehydrated – Risk of death

Symptoms of Dehydration

Here are some of the symptoms that you need more water:

  • Dark Urine – Yellow or Orange in Color: Dark color or strong smell indicates that you need to drink more water.
  • Dry Skin: Skin is the largest body organ and requires its share of water.
  • Thirst: Thirst is the most obvious sign that you’re already dehydrated. It is always a good practice to drink more water when your are not thirsty, don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
  • Hunger: Most people mistake hunger for the indication to eat more, whereas in actual fact, they may be dehydrated. So before you have your meal, grab a glass of water.
  • Fatigue: Water is a source of energy and gives you a boost in energy.

You will be amazed of the benefits of drinking water as follow:

  • Lose weight: Drinking water flushes down the by-products of fat breakdown. Drinking water reduces hunger, it’s an effective appetite suppressant so you’ll eat smaller portions.
  • Natural Remedy for Headache: Helps to relieve headache and back pains due to dehydration. Although many reasons contribute to headache, dehydration is the common one.
  • Healthier Skin: Water helps to replenish skin tissues, moisturizes skin and increases skin elasticity.
  • Better Productivity at Work: Your brain is mostly made up of water, thus drinking water helps you think better, be more alert and more concentrated.
  • Better Exercise: Drinking water regulates your body temperature. That means you’ll feel more energetic when doing exercises. Water also helps to fuel your muscle.
  • Aids in Digestion and Constipation: Drinking water raises your metabolism because it helps in digestion. Fiber and water goes hand in hand so that you can have your daily bowel movement.
  • Less Cramps and Sprains: Proper hydration helps keep your joints and muscles lubricated, so you’ll less likely get cramps and sprains.
  • Less Likely to Get Sick and Feel Healthy: Drinking plenty of water allows the body to flush its metabolites appropriately, helps fight against flu and other ailments like kidney stones and heart attack. Water adds with lemon is used for ailments like respiratory disease, intestinal problems, rheumatism and arthritis etc. In another words one of the benefits of drinking water is that it can improve your immune system.
  • Relieves Fatigue: Water is used by the body to help flush out toxins and waste products from the body. If your body lacks water, your heart, for instance, needs to work harder to pump out the oxygenated blood to all cells, so are the rest of the vital organs, your organs will be exhausted and so will you.
  • Good Mood: Your body feels very good and that’s why you feel happy.
  • Reduce the Risk of Cancer: Related to the digestive system, some studies show that drinking a healthy amount of water may reduce the risks of bladder cancer and colon cancer. Water dilutes the concentration of cancer-causing agents in the urine and shortens the time in which they are in contact with bladder lining.

So, how much water should you drink? 8 glasses a day? More or less? Ideally, drinking half of your body weight in ounces would create a tremendous benefit. For example, let’s say you weigh 160 lbs., so you should drink 80 ounces of water during the day, which is 8 10-ounce glasses of water.
